M1A2 SEP TUSK Main Tank

In August 2006, General Dynamics collaborated with the Lima Army Tank Plant to develop the M1A2 TUSK (Tank Urban Survival Kit), an urban combat variant of the Abrams tank. 

During the Iraq War, General Franks, commander of U.S. Central Command, dubbed the M1A2 main battle tank the "King of the Desert." Now, the M1A2 TUSK has earned the 

nickname "King of Urban Combat" among U.S. forces.  

The M1A2 TUSK’s upgrades utilize existing mature technologies to ensure compatibility with all battlefield units without requiring depot-level modifications. Key enhancements include:  
- A remotely operated weapon station (for M1A2 only) enabling 24/7 operation with hatches closed;  
- A thermal sight for the loader’s M240 machine gun;  
- Reactive armor panels for side skirts;  
- A gunner’s shield;  
- Tank-infantry communication phones;  
- Grille armor protecting the rear engine compartment;  
- A commander’s machine gun thermal sight (for M1A1 only).  
These improvements significantly boost survivability and combat effectiveness in urban environments.  

The M1A2 TUSK’s main gun now carries high-explosive squash head (HESH) and delayed-action armor-piercing rounds, 

which penetrate building walls before detonating to neutralize entrenched enemies. A rooftop remote weapon station integrates a 12.7mm heavy machine gun, color cameras,

 a laser rangefinder, and stabilization systems, allowing crew members to engage targets from within the armored hull. Additionally, an intelligent mapping system rapidly generates 3D structural 

maps of surrounding buildings.  

Survivability is prioritized: add-on armor covers the flanks and rear, while an undercarriage protection plate reduces mine blast damage.

 To counter Molotov cocktails, polycarbonate shields and metal mesh protect vulnerable components like sights and air vents, 

making it nearly impossible for small incendiary devices to penetrate. These upgrades double the tank’s effectiveness against urban threats like 

rocket-propelled grenades and incendiary weapons compared to the baseline M1A2.
